Introduction to photography
Exercise 4b - Principals underpinning composition

Lecture : Before we started the class , Mr Vinod talked about the previous exercise 4.a (rule of thirds) and also gave us the general feedback for week 7. After that, we asked some questions about the difficulties we had while doing exercise 4a . Besides, Mr. Vinod showed us some good photographs from our senior. Before the class dismissed. Mr.Vinod also talked and explained about the principles of composition and told us about the exercise 4b that we were supposed to do .

Instruction for exercise 4b :

Exercise 4b: Principles underpinning composition
Capture 4 Images adhering to any of the mentioned principles below:
Domination/Emphasis • Isolation • Balance • Repetition • Alignment • Contrast • Rhythm • Symmetry/Asymmetry • Harmony

Print all 4 images on an A4 as instructed in class.

(Put to use what you have learnt in the Zone system exercises here)

Feedback : Mr.Vinod said : '' Holly, nice work on the pic representing the principle of contrast (frangipani flower) and the repetition (cylindrical tube) was also nice. Good.

Your reflection was good: you articulated your thought well. ''
Reflection -

Experience : Today , Mr. Vinod gave us our general feedback based on last week's exercise . In this general feedback , I have learned when taking a photograph with the rule of thirds in mind, it’s always best to compose the photograph in the camera. This is that you can avoid cropping your picture to retain as much of the image as possible and avoid reducing the quality of your photographs. Besides, in this exercise, I experienced that it is quite hard to find a subject or environment to capture that mentioned principles .

Observations : I realized that most of us were having trouble with our exercise 4a (rule of thirds) . We would need to do more practice when using the rule of thirds . From this exercise 4b , I don’t know whether I did it better or not, but I already did my best . In this exercise , I observed that to take good pictures, the weather must be bright enough as it affects the exposure . I also observed that it is quite difficult to find the dominant and symmetry in a photograph. Last but not least, I observed that the composition is so important as exposure that the part of taking a good photograph, without one of them, a photograph is not good enough.

Finidngs : I found out that we need to observe more when photographing . As Mr.Vinod told us not to take photographs just to complete our exercises. It is important to bring out the point of interest in your pictures . I found out that we need to take a lot of time to capture in order to present a good photography, I also realized that I can't do it in last minute and it would turn out the bad effect .
