Final assignment : Greeting card


Right after we done presenting the colour wheel group assignment, Ms.Lisa had told us about our final assignment, making a greeting card. She said that we will have to design 3 theme based greeting cards and as for the theme, we are free to choose anything. As usual,  we have to do minimum of 3 theme proposals, and 3 detailed samples for each theme = 9 sketches in total (minimum) for next tutorials

This assignment is due in 3 weeks.

Ms. Lisa was pleased with my cards. She was glad that I keep it simple in the end. I was quite shocked that she likes my cards because I thought my cards was not as great as other of my course mates. I think mine was pretty simple and also cute ! hehehe  the cards also reveal my style .

Presentation of colour wheel assignment 

On the previous week, Ms. Lisa had told us to formed a group of 5 people in one group. Since our class is 24, we divided ourselves into 6 group consisting of 4 people. 

The design studio looked extremely colourful today! Definitely brings up the mood just by having a look at it. I was amazed by all the works did by the other groups, i felt proud for each and everyone of us and i really think we did a great job!

We divided the workload among ourselves and had planned to make 150 bird origami, consisting of 4 different types of birds: Warblers, Cranes, Swans, & Robins. After getting all the materials that we needed, we started to work.

Lecture : There is no lecture session for this week's class . He mentioned that we should be submitting our final project on week 16. He gave us a location where we could get our prints done which is somewhere in SS2.

Reflection :

Experience - Today, We showed him our portrait photo to Mr.Vinod . He gave us some feedbacks along the way. Mr. Vinod taught us how to do the studio flash lights. Before we start, he carries a black box, and told us that this is used as the power source of the flash lights. He shows us how to plug it in and what each of the buttons is for. He also did mention about a device to plug it in into the camera as the connecter with the flash lights. After explaining, Mr. Vinod becomes the model for our exercise for a while. After that, started shooting others of our classmates before we all gather in the center and show him our final pictures .

Observations - Today, I observed that the light is a big role in a photography. Even a slight change of position of the lights, makes a big change which is evident in a photograph. I also observed there is a tool for controlling the amount of lights used by each of the flash lights, so that it will help us to balance the lights .

Findings - I found out that I need to manage my time more carefully since all the final assignments needed to be done before the semester end . I was quite stressful as finals are approaching near and I have to back to school on weekend to do my assignments as well .

Reflection :

Experience - In this exercise , I took all the pictures at the play ground of my relative house . I actually enjoyed wandering around to take photo.There was a time when I’m taking a photo, I had to do it quickly because there are so many mosquito around that area,  that makes me felt so annoying . And I can't stand properly to take picture , I have to keep moving or shaking my body when I was taking those picture . That is so Annoying !

Observations - I noticed that by going to different places, there is more kind of trees to explore. The trees looks different at different where , I also realize that even if the trees look nice, I can’t seem to be able to find the perfect angle, and it took so long for me to actually get the perfect angle. And I noticed that I saw the detail of the trees in reality is different with what I saw in the picture . 

Findings - In this exercise , I found out that anyone can become a photographer , it is either professionally or amateur. Everyone can take a camera or a phone and take some pictures, but the picture can come out good or bad . And also , I found out that nowadays everyone can take good photographs with their advanced smartphone, that helps them to take photographs automatically and they can just edit it using smartphone .

Lecture : For today's lecture, we had short discussion of lighting. Which is different types of light and lighting in studio photography. After the presentation, Mr.Vinod brought us to photo studio (i'm this week first model for photo shooting exercise) XD . Mr.Vinod taught them how to set up the lights . Moreover, Our topic for this exercise is 1940 - 1960's make up and fashion so we have to dressed up exactly the same in the picture that we choose.

Instructions for lighting exercise :

Identify a period picture within the years of 1940 to early 1960s. Choose a picture that you are able to reenact or recreate. Prepare and plan your outfit, make-up and hair for the shoot. Try to achieve the same or similar result as your reference. Edit your picture in photoshop and update the picture to your Facebook profile. Document the process in your reflection on your e-portfolio blog.

Reflection -


Experience : In this exercise , I went around my hostel which place Subang Jaya SS15 . this time I only took the pictures around my hostel because I didn't go back to my cousin house or hometown like usually . And , there is nothing special around the place and there have a lot of rats and crows , lol .When I was taking the pictures I was so afraid of the rats and crows . At that moment , I just wanted to finish taking the photos as fast as possible , therefore I know that the final products are not that good .


Observations : I observed that my subject matter would be something nature , maybe is grass , trees or flower . Things like grass and trees are more suitable for me ,  so i have to try my best to find a suitable angle to take some good pictures as Final project .

Findings : Since I am the model of this week , I found out that modelling was not so bad after all. I would much rather be behind the scenes helping the photographer but not actually being the photographer, rather than be a model, but it was fun and very awesome to be able to do it and see the success in the outcome in the photograph.

Reflection :

Experience - We don't have class on week 12 due to we went to a class trip at Tanjung Malin . I bought my camera along with me during the trip so I can do my photography assignment at there . It was the first time I went to class trip , I experienced a new feeling that I had never have it before and I get a step closer to the natural , this makes me to forget the city and the stress that I had undergo .

Observations -  I have realised that some people who are not into photography don't get to see the beauty in taking photos in black and white, even in colour they don't consider their composition too . I have also observed that as each week passes, it is getting more difficult to get good photographs for the project, as there are less and less things to take photographs of.

Findings -  I found out that all the plant is easily found everywhere in the park, but i tend to walk around and see a lot to search for some interesting pieces. I also felt more comfortable taking pictures like so because it felt so nature, excluding the amount of mosquitoes attacking me of course.

Assignment 2b - Rule of Thirds ( composition )

Two weeks ago we learnt about composition in class. We also learnt about the Rules of third and apparently we were given a new assignment which requires us to make a short video out of picture taken applying the rules of third. The objectives of this assignments is knowing the importance of composition as we know composition not only applies in photography but same goes to art.

The most difficult part is I have to keep changing the button with each picture .

What I have gain from this assignment will be the further knowledge based on composition and the rules of third. I had learnt about composition and the rules of third when attending photography class and the knowledge I gain from Mr.Vinod classes also helped me out completing this assignment.

Lecture : As usual , Today Mr Vinod first gave us a briefing about the things that were about to do in the coming classes. He asked us to research on studio works which are photographed within the years of 1940-1960 .  He also told us that we would be taught on how to operate the photography studio in the following classes.

Reflection :

Experience -  I went back to hometown , Ipoh during this mid-term break , I bought my camera along with me in order to take picture for photography assignment . I took this pictures when the rain was just stopped . I went out from my house and found some plants and some flowers to take picture because I just stayed at my home on this few days . I supposed to go to some place to take nice picture , but nobody fetches me to go . lol . So I just done it around my house . 

The first four pictures I took it at the same time , after the four shots I felt bored that no place / subject to let me take picture then I went back inside my house to take a rest then only went out again and looking around to take the last shot .

Observations - In the beginning , I don't really like black and white pictures due to they are quite boring and nothing to attract me as well . I was wondering why Mr.Vinod told us to take the picture in black and white and I was feeling so strange at that time , but since I have been taking photos in black and white I already realised that it is actually quite interesting and challenging . 

Besides , I observed that the black and white keeps you focused on the actual composition, texture, and shading of the photo. They are better for learning the craft than color, as color tends to distract from things like shape and framing, etc..

Findings - I found out that it is really hard to find some nice places and objects in order to take nice pictures. I think i will really need to move around a lot to explore more so that my final outcome will have a consistency in it . i found out being a photographer are not that hard but the hardest thing are find the compositions and the daylights .
