Assignment 2b - Rule of Thirds ( composition )

Two weeks ago we learnt about composition in class. We also learnt about the Rules of third and apparently we were given a new assignment which requires us to make a short video out of picture taken applying the rules of third. The objectives of this assignments is knowing the importance of composition as we know composition not only applies in photography but same goes to art.

The most difficult part is I have to keep changing the button with each picture .

What I have gain from this assignment will be the further knowledge based on composition and the rules of third. I had learnt about composition and the rules of third when attending photography class and the knowledge I gain from Mr.Vinod classes also helped me out completing this assignment.

Lecture : As usual , Today Mr Vinod first gave us a briefing about the things that were about to do in the coming classes. He asked us to research on studio works which are photographed within the years of 1940-1960 .  He also told us that we would be taught on how to operate the photography studio in the following classes.

Instruction :

1) Choose a few theme that I would like to attempt.
2) Photograph 5 pictures that interrelate.
3) Upload photos on eportfolio.

Exercise in class -

4)
ISO 200   f/5   S 1/13

5)
ISO 200    f/2.8   S 1/160

Feedback : Mr.Vinod : ''Holly, the picture no.3 was well exposed, great tonality in the leaves. But as a series it was ok only. You need to explore further and try to look for scenes that are unique. You are doing well however with your exposures. Well done!''

Reflection :

Experience -  I went back to hometown , Ipoh during this mid-term break , I bought my camera along with me in order to take picture for photography assignment . I took this pictures when the rain was just stopped . I went out from my house and found some plants and some flowers to take picture because I just stayed at my home on this few days . I supposed to go to some place to take nice picture , but nobody fetches me to go . lol . So I just done it around my house .

The first four pictures I took it at the same time , after the four shots I felt bored that no place / subject to let me take picture then I went back inside my house to take a rest then only went out again and looking around to take the last shot .

Observations - In the beginning , I don't really like black and white pictures due to they are quite boring and nothing to attract me as well . I was wondering why Mr.Vinod told us to take the picture in black and white and I was feeling so strange at that time , but since I have been taking photos in black and white I already realised that it is actually quite interesting and challenging .

Besides , I observed that the black and white keeps you focused on the actual composition, texture, and shading of the photo. They are better for learning the craft than color, as color tends to distract from things like shape and framing, etc..

Findings - I found out that it is really hard to find some nice places and objects in order to take nice pictures. I think i will really need to move around a lot to explore more so that my final outcome will have a consistency in it . i found out being a photographer are not that hard but the hardest thing are find the compositions and the daylights .

Specific Feedback - Mr Vinod said : '' Limited Feedback, Week 10.

Holly, your work was interesting. The use of depth of field was good, the subjects were sharp and clearly defined. However, you The first two shots were ordinary in that it lacked a strong point of interest and the exposure for the point of interest was a little over exposed.

The 4th picture was very good, great contrast, use of space, sharpness and exposure.

Keep shooting more and study your subjects in-depth and make your selections of your subject carefully ... so that it turn out like no 4. ''

Reflection ( In class ) :

Experience - Today Mr.Vinod asked us to go out from class to take some 'waoooo' pictures by ourself and show him later on . It is individual work, we can't do it with classmate. I felt bored that taking pictures in the campus every time because I have no idea where should I capture at. I walked around the campus and looking for some interest things to let me shot .

observations - I realized that my lack of motivation of doing the exercise at the campus , because there have nothing special to let me capturing for .

Findings - I found out that if I want to capture a great photo I should go out from house or school . and go to some where else to capture . There have the motivation to let me to move on .

Reflection ( Exercise ) :

Experience - I took these pictures at my relative house . I went to the playground from the house and captured it . I do remember that time the weather is so hot and I was baking in the sun . When taking photos we should also take our time , analyse and be critical..

observations - In this exercise , I realised that taking a picture that can makes people 'waoo '  is not that easy . I have also realized that I am slowly learning more and more and I am actually applying these things that I have learnt in my everyday life too . When I was taking picture at the other where , I mean not in the class or campus . For example , I want to take some pictures when I hanging out with my friends and family members , before taking the pictures my mind will definitely thinking about the rule of thirds or the exposure that I have learnt in the class .

Findings - Actually I still do not know which or what topic should I choose for my final project . Maybe it would take me a lot of time or few weeks more then only I can decide that what theme that suitable me well . Also, I found out that I have to do more research on some themes and seek out that theme that suit with me . I also found out many knowledge about the photography

Lecture : Today ,I missed out the class because I have already went back to my hometown before the lecture , I was worried about the exercise so that I message to ask my friends about the exercise for week 9 . What I supposed tis to find a topic for our final project and take 5 photos in black in white which applies all the things that he taught us in class .

Instruction :

1) Choose a few theme that I would like to attempt.
2) Photograph 5 pictures that interrelate.
3) Upload photos on eportfolio.

Here are some pictures that I took at my hometown , Ipoh .

Feedback : None

Reflection -

Experience : This was my very first time to go out from my house just for taking photos . I took these photos at Ipoh town .I have also invited my secondary school friend to accompany me for taking photos . In this exercise , I experienced that taking a good photo, the weather must be bright enough . But not tobright or too dark , because it might definitely affects the quality of picture .  I also experienced that being a photographer must be very brave and don't be afraid of takinphotos in front of strangers .

Observations  :  In this exercise , I realized that finding our own theme is not that easy because we can't just randomly choose any theme as our final project . I have also realized that it is quite hard to have a friend that like to photography like you . Besides , In this exercise , I realized that being a good photographer must be very patient whenever taking photo .

Findings : In this exercise  , I had difficulties with it because I couldn’t think about what theme should I choose as my final project . So , I decided that I have to take some photos first, then only decide what topic should I choose . I also hope that I will be able tchoose the right theme for this project and I will try my best to do this project.

Exercise 4b - Principals underpinning composition

Lecture : Before we started the class , Mr Vinod talked about the previous exercise 4.a (rule of thirds) and also gave us the general feedback for week 7. After that, we asked some questions about the difficulties we had while doing exercise 4a . Besides, Mr. Vinod showed us some good photographs from our senior. Before the class dismissed. Mr.Vinod also talked and explained about the principles of composition and told us about the exercise 4b that we were supposed to do .

Feedback : Mr.Vinod said : '' Holly, nice work on the pic representing the principle of contrast (frangipani flower) and the repetition (cylindrical tube) was also nice. Good.

--
Your reflection was good: you articulated your thought well. ''
Reflection -

Experience : Today , Mr. Vinod gave us our general feedback based on last week's exercise . In this general feedback , I have learned when taking a photograph with the rule of thirds in mind, it’s always best to compose the photograph in the camera. This is that you can avoid cropping your picture to retain as much of the image as possible and avoid reducing the quality of your photographs. Besides, in this exercise, I experienced that it is quite hard to find a subject or environment to capture that mentioned principles .

Observations : I realized that most of us were having trouble with our exercise 4a (rule of thirds) . We would need to do more practice when using the rule of thirds . From this exercise 4b , I don’t know whether I did it better or not, but I already did my best . In this exercise , I observed that to take good pictures, the weather must be bright enough as it affects the exposure . I also observed that it is quite difficult to find the dominant and symmetry in a photograph. Last but not least, I observed that the composition is so important as exposure that the part of taking a good photograph, without one of them, a photograph is not good enough.

Finidngs : I found out that we need to observe more when photographing . As Mr.Vinod told us not to take photographs just to complete our exercises. It is important to bring out the point of interest in your pictures . I found out that we need to take a lot of time to capture in order to present a good photography, I also realized that I can't do it in last minute and it would turn out the bad effect .
